Two babies and their families were filmed throughout their first year of life to show how they learn to communicate.
As well as showing how pre-verbal communication skills allow others to understand the baby's needs, the film shows how these skills are the basis for the future use of words.
The pre-verbal stages of speech development are shown very clearly – the importance of eye contact, facial expression, use of the hands and gestures, taking turns, listening, practicing sounds, copying and learning what sounds mean. We also see the sort of situations that encourage communication.
The film ends at twelve months, just before the first words appear.
