Learning to Talk

This gives a practical insight into speech development during the first two years.

After looking briefly at the first year, when the foundations of communication are laid, we follow two children as they learn the basics of language.

We see how the first words lead on from the pre-verbal stage and how, in a relatively short space of time children begin to put sentences together.

We see clear examples of both active and passive vocabulary, generalisation of words, telegraphic speech, two word sentences and much more. We also show the sort of activities that help at each stage and how important it is to listen to children and interact with them.
