Child Observation No.4 - Pretend Play

This consists of source material of children’s pretend play featuring children from 20 months to 7 years.

The 11 sequences can be used individually for observation. Also, as they are presented chronologically by age, they clearly show the developmental stages of pretend play.

    20 months - at home with toys and a cloth

    20 months - at home with a doll and a snack
  • "Joanne’s tea party"
    2.5 years - at home with mum, soft toys and a tea set
  • "The dancing class"
    3 year olds - at nursery dressing up with an adult
  • "Harley gets dinner"
    4 years - at home with a tea set and dolls
  • "Mums & dads"
    3.5 & 4 years - in bedroom with assorted toys
  • "Cats & dogs"
    3.5 & 4 years - in bedroom with story book and toys

    4 & 5.5 years - in garden with slide and climbing frame

Sequences show learning taking place in all major areas – physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional and creative.

There is also a good opportunity for discussion of gender issues.
