Here we show time sampling and event sampling techniques in detail.
Two nursery school children aged between 3 and 4 years – (a shy withdrawn girl and a boy – sometimes disruptive) are filmed separately throughout whole afternoon sessions.
A time and an event sample observation is then shown for each child. For the time sample, a ten second clip is shown on the screen (taken every ten minutes over a two hour period) giving 12 ten second sequences. For the event sample, for the girl, every interaction where she was spoken to or spoke herself is shown. For the boy every interaction where he is involved in a disruption is shown.
The accompanying notes detail the results showing the difference in the information gained from the two different observation techniques.
