Two babies and their families were filmed throughout their first year of life to show how they learn to communicate.

As well as showing how pre-verbal communication skills allow others to understand the baby’s needs, the film shows how these skills are the basis for the future use of words.

The pre-verbal stages of speech development are shown very clearly:

  • The importance of eye contact
  • Facial expression
  • Taking turns
  • Use of the hands and gestures
  • Listening
  • Practicing sounds
  • Copying
  • Learning what sounds mean

We also see the sort of situations that encourage communication.

The film ends at twelve months, just before the first words appear.

28 mins
