This film shows a detailed example of how to carry out a target child observation. It uses a continuous ten minute sequence of five 4 and 5 year olds in an infant school classroom.
They are sitting round a table drawing pictures of being helpful to someone. It is presented first without interruption so that it can be used to practice observing with a variety of objectives (social behaviour, concentration, language development etc.)
Two children are then picked out, one socially confident, the other withdrawn, and the sequence is repeated twice as each child is observed separately (concentrating here on social behaviour). The sequence pauses each minute and the observations are noted on the screen.
Evaluations based on the observations follow each sequence. The children’s finished pictures with evaluations are included.
The DVD comes with a 16 page user notes booklet.
The dvd is organised as follows:
- Complete uninterupted sequence
- Same sequence with observation - child C
- Evaluation of child C
- Same sequence with observation of - child D
- Evaluation of child D
- Children’s drawings and evaluation
59 mins
