Toddlers Outdoors

Once again Siren Films have produced a resource of high quality, aimed at early years practitioners, trainers and students with the intent to extend our understanding of the nature of children's development.

This particular DVD focuses on six toddlers between the ages of 13 to 22 months playing outside and displaying similar developmental traits.  Yet each toddler demonstrates a unique approach to playing outside, highlighting the importance of outdoor play for this age group.  The filmed sequences are of the highest quality affording the viewer a real insight into children of this age group.

The supporting printed materials are invaluable as they link developmental theory with practice by a commentary which focuses on "Things to notice and understand".  Each child's video clip is supported by material which looks at the importance of movement and sensory exploration and the use of hands in relation to learning outdoors.  The toddlers individual schemas are explored as are the resources and materials available to them and the role of peer and adult relationships.  Suggestions are made for further development of practice in relation to the organisation, the use of real and natural resources available in the outdoor environment and how they impact the adults engaged with the toddlers be it practitioners or parents.

A must for all early years practitioners working with toddlers who are considering the development of their  outdoor learning environment or wishing to understand toddlers natural tendency to want to be outside.  Jan White's commentary combines her knowledge and understanding of outdoor play with children's development and current practice.
