Attachment and Holistic Development

Early Years Update (Issue 64 December / January 2009), pg.11.

Attachment and Holistic Development is the latest DVD to be released by Siren Films as part of their observation series. It follows the first year of baby Orson's life, starting with a sequence filmed just after birth and continuing with sequences filmed during each of his first 12 months, and makes fascinating viewing. The sequences all involve interactions with other members of his family - his mother, his father and his six year old brother. The sequences have been carefully chosen to illustrate not just overall development, but also many aspects relevant to the attachment process.

The sequences are clear and professionally presented, making it easy to see the different skills and abilities which Orson is developing. The interactions between adults and young children have been sensitively filmed and provide a privileged insight into the developing relationships between Orson and his family.

The DVD comes with a comprehensive set of notes. These highlight the particular aspects of development to look out for in each film clip. There is background information on child development, comprehensive links to the learning and development aspects of the EYFS framework, and a very useful list of questions for reflection and discussion.

This resource will be invaluable to trainers providing courses for practitioners working with children under three, but would also be a very worthwhile resource which could be used during in-house training sessions in full day care settings. It is a wonderful resource to use with new parents, who would also find the film sequences informative, enoyable and reassuring.
