Babies Outdoors
The footage is excellent as always. The DVD works very well in that it offers a good range of under ones, some of whom we see more than once. It is also an advantage that we see a range of outdoor environments - own home garden, out and about, in the park and in a nursery outdoor space. It is also really good footage to show the interaction between a mother or key person in the nursery and how they remain close - not only for the safety angle but for the vital communication. There are also good examples to show how the adults share the baby's focus, add something in words and also make the most of what interests the baby right now.
I also like how the film uses the camera to show the baby's visual perspective and tracking. That, and the attention to sounds outdoors and seeing the hands-on nature of the experience to the babies, really gives a window onto their world of learning from experience outdoors.
'Babies Outdoors' inevitably brings up hygiene and safety - two of the aspects that outdoor-resistant adults sometimes use as an excuse. The footage plus voice over picks up neatly on an adult being close, so that inappropriate items do not go into the baby's mouth.
