Two Year Old's Outdoors
The DVD really promotes the power of the outdoors and the learning potential for children of simple, natural materials. The film details physical development and explains why certain movements are so important. It shows very effectively what is meant by the vestibular system and it is also very useful how on at least two occasions, one of which was rolling in the tunnel, the film uses the camera to give direct experience of what the child would have been seeing.
The sequences really show the individual learning journey over time. There are very good examples, picked up by the voice over, of how children make connections, recall and drive their own learning - so
long as they have time and are not rushed. The film provides excellent footage to illustrate the whole child-initiated learning approach.
The film sequences show how practitioners should behave - following the child's focus of interest (including the minute details of what they have noticed), making sure generous resources are
available but keeping them simple. There are many examples of proper conversations between children and adults, and those adults not high-jacking the exchange. It is good to see clips showing that these
young children do not need adults close by all the time and highlighting how they play and talk together.
This film shows really useful footage on two year olds - often an overlooked and under-estimated age band.
