Two Year Olds Outdoors
Two year olds can offer a challenge as they have moved on from being a toddler but are not yet understanding and behaving as nursery age children. This is an important stage of development in its own right when there is an explosion of language, imagination and social abilities. This DVD presents convincing evidence of how the outdoor environment can meet so many needs of this fascinating age group.
The six very different children are shown moving energetically, extending their schematic interests for example in trajectories and enriching their imaginations in play and song.
The clip of one child who has learning delay is particularly memorable. Leila, with help from her key person accesses nutrition outdoors for all aspects of her development. She is helped to walk but encouraged to balance and support herself. She is challenged by the impact of a strong wind in the garden and is helped to reach with a stick to knock wind chimes. She joins in with other children dancing and singing. This clip alone offers an inspirational example of the scope of the outdoors to motivate and encourage young children to reach out to new things.
The booklet is clear, beautifully written and packed full of information about the development of two-year- olds. It is a very valuable resource for tutors and managers leading training at all levels.
