Introduction to event & time sampling observation technique

Focusing on three-year-old classmates, Event and Time Sampling looks at the process and benefits of these techniques within a primary school setting.

Good for looking at

  • Observation techniques that are 'fit for purpose'
  • Shy or withdrawn behaviour
  • Identifying possible behavioural issues

Two children are featured here; one, a timid young girl; the other, a young boy who appears to be at the centre of classroom disruption.

The event sampling of this recording shows you all the interactions of the girl when she’s speaking or is spoken to and each instance where the young boy is involved in some form of disruption. As part of the time sampling process, 12 10-second sequences (shot over two hours) are shown on screen to show classroom events within this period.

We advise that the detailed notes (see further reading) are used alongside the film itself to help you understand the intricacies of event and time sampling techniques.
