Notice

  • How do we know what Khloe is interested in?  Be specific, look out for body language, actions, gestures.
  • How does Khloe engage with the environment?
  • What is she learning from her play?
  • Which development areas, characteristics of learning are evident?
  • How does the adult support Khloe?

Reflect

What are your thoughts about:

  • Khloe getting her own drink? The environment is set up so she doesn’t have to communicate her need to an adult, is it better for her to be able to be self-reliant or should the environment encourage the need for communication?
  • Khloe’s levels of involvement in her self chosen activity?
  • The value of this type of explorative play for Khloe?
  • Khloe using the bathroom as place to explore?
  • The role of the adult in this interaction – did she support Khloe?

Respond

What would you do to:

  • Encourage Khloe to communicate her interests?
  • Extend Khloe’s learning – e.g. looking at the flow of water outside in the garden? or indoors at the water tray?

What next:

  • Khloe knew where to get her self a drink and was happy exploring the setting. Do you need to think about how accessible the areas of your environment are for all of the children in your setting?
