Child observation

Deep understanding of individual children comes from close and regular observation. Only then can practitioners know what children know and understand and what they enjoy doing.

Child observation is the basis of effective practice. It’s a complex skill and needs much practice. Some observations should be planned and there are various ways of doing this. But experienced practitioners are also observing all of the time, trying not to miss any important responses from children that will inform them about the child’s thinking and developments.
